Proven Tips: How to Prepare for the Successful Interview

Before the Interview

  1. Double check the scheduled interview appointment time.
  2. Know the interviewer's full name, correct pronunciation, and title.
  3. Obtain information about the school system before your interview.
  4. Prepare several questions to ask during the interview to help you learn more about the position and the school district.
  5. Prepare extra copies of your resume, examples of your work, transcripts, and certificates.
  6. Take along pen and paper for note taking.

Day of the Interview

  1. Dress in professional business attire.
  2. Arrive for interview 10-15 minutes ahead of time.

During the Interview - Behaviors and Attitudes

  1. Greet interviewer with a firm handshake, a smile and look into his/her eyes.
  2. Project a positive attitude and enthusiasm for the interview opportunity.
  3. Be yourself and smile.
  4. Wait until invited to take a seat.
  5. Do not be in a hurry. Take time to think before you speak.
  6. Sit comfortably, but be composed.
  7. Respond concisely, truthfully, and in a friendly manner.
  8. Try to relax and use deep breathing techniques as a comforter.
  9. Look at the interviewer when speaking.

During the Interview - Goals and Objectives

  1. Ask the interviewer to review the requirements of the position.
  2. Display a genuine interest in young people.
  3. Find something positive to relate about former places of employment.
  4. Provide examples when responding to questions.
  5. Demonstrate your good listening skills by summarizing or rephrasing.
  6. Explain your answers, and speak in complete sentences.
  7. Try to convey your skills and experience in relationship to the position available.
  8. Ask for clarification of the question, if you need it.
  9. Show how your accomplishments and achievements relate to your overall preparation for the position available.
  10. Indicate what you believe you can do for students and the school system. Be specific.
  11. Ask about the possibility of supervising extra-curricular activities and serving on school committees to benefit the school community.

Concluding the Interview

  1. Ask what the district. s time table is for filling the position.
  2. Thank the interviewer for spending time with you.
  3. If you are genuinely interested in the position, make sure the interviewer knows that before you leave and knows that you want to be considered an active candidate.
  4. Assume you are a viable candidate for the position.

After the Interview

  1. Make a note to ask about salary and fringe benefits at the next interview.
  2. Send a thank you note for the interview the same day.
